How to Turn Off Your Water Supply: Essential Emergency Guide

Knowing how to turn off your water supply can prevent thousands of pounds in flood damage. Every Glasgow homeowner should know where their stopcocks and isolation valves are BEFORE an emergency happens.

Where to Find Your Stopcock (Internal Stop Valve)

The stopcock controls all cold water entering your property.

Common Stopcock Locations

Kitchen:

  • Under the sink (most common)
  • Behind kickboard near sink
  • In corner cupboard

Other Locations:

  • Under stairs
  • In airing cupboard
  • In cellar/basement
  • Garage (attached properties)
  • Downstairs toilet

How to Identify a Stopcock

  • Brass or chrome tap-like valve
  • Usually on a pipe coming through the wall or floor
  • Turns clockwise to close
  • May have a blue or red handle

How to Turn Off the Internal Stopcock

  1. Locate the stopcock - Usually under kitchen sink
  2. Turn clockwise - "Righty tighty" to close
  3. May need gentle force - If stiff, use WD-40 and adjustable spanner
  4. Check water is off - Run a tap, water should stop flowing
  5. Leave tap open - To drain remaining water in pipes

Important: Turn your stopcock on and off once a year to prevent it seizing.

Outdoor Stop Tap (External Stop Valve)

If your internal stopcock doesn't work, use the outdoor stop tap.

Where to Find It

  • Small metal or plastic cover in the pavement/path
  • Usually near your property boundary
  • Marked with "W" or "SV" (stop valve)
  • Typically 30-60cm deep

How to Use It

  1. Lift the cover (may need screwdriver)
  2. Use a stop tap key (available from hardware stores, ~£10)
  3. Insert key and turn clockwise
  4. May need several turns

Note: In tenements, one outdoor stop tap may serve multiple flats.

Isolation Valves (Individual Appliances)

Modern plumbing has isolation valves for each fixture:

Where to Find Them

  • Under sinks (hot and cold supplies)
  • Behind toilets (one valve)
  • Under baths (access panel)
  • Behind washing machines/dishwashers

How to Use Them

  • Lever handle: Turn perpendicular to pipe (off)
  • Slotted head: Use screwdriver to turn 90 degrees

Tip: Isolation valves let you turn off one appliance without affecting the whole house.
