Can I Turn My Heating On if Boiler Is Losing Pressure?

Is it safe to use your heating when the boiler pressure is low? Learn when it's okay, when to stop, and how to repressurise your boiler safely.

Can I Turn My Heating On if Boiler Is Losing Pressure?

Quick Answer: If pressure is between 0.5-1 bar, you can usually use the heating briefly, but should repressurise soon. Below 0.5 bar, most boilers will lock out and won't work. Continuous pressure loss indicates a leak that needs fixing.

Safe Pressure Ranges

PressureStatusAction
1.5-2 bar (hot)IdealNone needed
1-1.5 bar (cold)NormalNone needed
0.5-1 barLowRepressurise soon
Below 0.5 barToo lowDon't use, repressurise now
Above 2.5 barToo highRelease pressure or call engineer

How to Repressurise Your Boiler

  1. Find the filling loop - A braided hose, usually under the boiler
  2. Check valves are closed - Both ends
  3. Open one valve then the other slowly
  4. Watch the pressure gauge - Stop at 1-1.5 bar
  5. Close both valves - In reverse order
  6. Reset boiler if needed

Why Is My Boiler Losing Pressure?

Common causes:

  • Bleeding radiators - Normal, just top up
  • Small leak in system - Needs finding and fixing
  • Faulty pressure relief valve - Dripping outside
  • Expansion vessel issue - Requires engineer

When to Call an Engineer

Call a Gas Safe engineer if:

  • Pressure drops repeatedly (daily/weekly)
  • You can't locate the filling loop
  • There are visible leaks
  • Boiler shows error codes
  • You're not confident repressurising
